First place in the Oil painting category is awarded to Ester Barrett of Limerick, Ireland for her piece titled "In the Swell". For one of the largest paintings displayed in this show this piece demonstrates an eye-catching image that has the ability to draw the viewer into the bold composition. There is an overall harmony of man, nature and beast achieved by consistent brushwork throughout the canvas. The soft layered grays and whites of the sea turbulence contrast well with the chestnut browns and reds of the solid coloured horses. There is enough absesce of details that guides the imagination towards a conversation with the entire delightful seacoast moment. Even the high gloss finish varnish adds another element of the watery ride.
